Original Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in Christ’s Dispensation

According to BYU Studies, the original apostles were:

  • Simon Peter

  • James, son of Zebedee

  • John, brother of James

  • Andrew

  • Philip

  • Bartholomew

  • Matthew the Publican

  • Thomas

  • James, son of Alphaeus

  • Thaddeus

  • Simon the Cananean OR Jude, brother of James

  • Judas Iscariot

We know of at least two other men, Matthias and Paul, who were ordained as apostles in the time period covered by the Book of Acts.

The members of the original Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, along with their dates of calling and release:

  1. Thomas B. Marsh

    • Called by the Three Witnesses on April 25, 1835

    • Called as Quorum President on April 25, 1835

    • Released by excommunication for apostasy on March 17, 1839

  2. David W. Patten

    • Called by the Three Witnesses on February 15, 1835

    • Released by death from wounds sustained at the Battle of Crooked River on October 25, 1838

  3. Brigham Young

    • Called by the Three Witnesses on February 14, 1835

    • Called as Quorum President by Joseph Smith Jr. on April 14, 1840

    • Called as Church President on December 27, 1847

    • Released by death on August 29, 1877

  4. Heber C. Kimball

    • Called by the Three Witnesses on February 14, 1835

    • Called as 1st Counselor in the First Presidency by Brigham Young on December 27, 1847

    • Released by death on June 22, 1868

  5. Orson Hyde

    • Called by the Three Witnesses on February 15, 1835

    • Released by a vote of the church on May 4, 1839

    • Reinstated by Joseph Smith Jr. on June 27, 1839

    • Called as Quorum President by Brigham Young on December 27, 1839

    • Released as Quorum President by April 10, 1875

    • Released by death on November 28, 1878

  7. Parley P. Pratt
