40 years ago- Deng Xiaoping of China and Jimmy Carter sign peace accords in response to Xiaoping’s new policies in economic reform. These policies included expanding economic ties with the Western world, establishing greater economic freedom in the Chinese market, and creating economic incentives for workers. In return, Carter gave full diplomatic recognition to the People’s Republic of China.

40 years ago- In San Diego, 16 year-old Brenda Spencer murdered two men and wounded nine children as they entered the Grover Cleveland Elementary School. When asked for her causation for the attack, she stated: “I just don’t like Mondays. I did this because it’s a way to cheer up the day. Nobody likes Mondays.”
